What's a voussoir?
A voussoir is a tapered segment of an arch:
a collaboration between architectural vision and structural finesse.
stone voussoirs of a semi-circular arch in Turku, Finland
a pointed stone arch in Jerusalem
brick voussoirs at Trajan's Market in Rome
Some relatively new structures on the west coast of the U.S. feature voussoirs too (below): whether straight ahead and traditional or as a remarkable skewed arch vault tunnel, these modules can make spans visually appealing while being structurally efficient.
The voussoir reminds us there is much in the world to learn from, to embrace creativity even within tradition, and to acknowledge both form and function. In sum, it is a metaphor for what Voussoir Architecture believes in: teamwork that harnesses both tradition and innovation.
