Inspired by the joy of snow country, skiing, mountain views, and the familiarity of having a place to escape that is crafted to one's own needs, this cabin took on an engaging form. The project involved the complete reorganization of existing spaces with the addition of dormers, porches, and a roof platform--all to an exacting standard with high-performance energy and comfort features in addition to daylihgting, durability and aesthetic integrity.
Creating a welcoming and protected entry and facade was the first order of business
The cabin had good bones and an interesting relationship between the two volumes with courtyard from a series of previous renovations and additions.
Budget was a concern, but when one owner climebed to the peak of the roof and looked at the mountain view a roof platform was born.
There's a rugged tranquility in the platform, and its gritty planks that bring you closer to the clear air of the alpine pines
The roof platform is one of many playful areas amongst cozy escapes both indoors and out
The expansive view was never in question
But the program, materiality, and details necessitaed deliberate development during both design and construction phases
Separate guest, equipment, and toy space is just as much a part of the program as the primary cabin itself
Alas after a few busy years the the cabin came into service for generations of gatherings and getaways
