Vine Maple Residence

This project was a comprehensive gut and remodel of an approximately 5,000 sf home with good overall bones to it, sitting on a large wooded city lot. Some rooms such as the kitchen were in more dire need of help and everything was dated, but the views were excellent as was the potential for every single room. The exterior only required minor freshening up (at right).

We worked closely with the owners on design, even making a trip down to San Francisco for the Japanese soaking tub (ofuro), and we implemented the construction as a fast-track project. The formerly dim and claustrophobic kitchen was vaulted to realize its full potential.

We enhanced connections between rooms, adding clerestories and relites to animate the spaces and help them flow better.

The master bath soaking tub (ofuro) was a central feature and we enhanced the experience with bamboo and port orford cedar sideboards and step (concealing drain) over a bed of rocks, as well as an operable window with a broadside view to the wooded world outside.

The dual shower and soaking tub sits behind these alaskan yellow cedar doors.

Every room on all three floors was planned out methodically.

It's a large house big on both volume and views, which became much more inspiring through the comprehensive remodel.
