This well-crafted, high performance home was designed by a colleague--Michael Fifield, FAIA--and we took over for him after SD was well on its way. The concept was strong, and fun to develop further for this steeper hillside site full of native oaks--a keystone species the owners were keen to preserve to the maximum extent feasible.
The clerestory balances the daylighitng and built-ins allow light to spread above their open tops, creating a coziness from the nested scale of the space with its spare detailing.
The upper level is laid out for accessibiltiy with a bedroom and office that can can be used as a guest bed. Downstairs a single guest suite can double as a family room.
Details outside are as well executed as they are inside
The large south overhang shades the glazing in summer
Open vistas of treetops between segmented roof forms create a dynamic relationship between the built and natural skyscape
And the whole ensemble nestles comfortably into its site
