Cutting an awning into an existing facade for a new public service window required thoughtful intervention. This resulted in a challenging bit of construction, but a rewarding effect using a single post to support glass panels above, and a raingarden below to absorb storm runoff into an adjacent sculpture garden.
The orange solar shade awning was created by an inspiring colleague (John Reynolds and collaborators) as part of the 1987 EPUD Headquarters project's original construction utilizing passive cooling, daylighting, and natural elements to create an uplifting work environment.
For our part, we wanted to integrate the new awning into this elegant whole, with minimal parts serving integrated structural and functional purposes.
Seeing the new native plants used to filter the stormwater at the awning's base consipire with the return of the original deciduous vine (virginia creeper) in the first summer after invasive constrcution activities was inspiring--and bodes well for future years of nature's continued collaboration here.
